Peridot is the beautiful August birthstone, often described as "olive green." Some referred to this stone as "the evening emerald" for how it shined in the darkness. As a member of the olivine mineral group, peridot can come in various shades of yellowish-green to greenish-yellow. Peridot is found globally, but one of the primary sources is in Arizona. Records show that ancient Egyptians mined for peridot in the 3rd century on an island in the Red Sea; they even called it "the gem of the sun!" Cleopatra loved it; maybe you will too! There has even been a 100-carat peridot found, but this is very rare. The cleaner and greener the stone is, the more value the peridot holds.
