Sunstone Gemstone Spotlight
Jay Boyle and Shelly Sergent sponsor sunstone in this Gemstone Spotlight. Sunstone is a gemstone with a common name but is unusual to see because of its rarity. Sunstone is also known as Oregon sunstone because it's commonly found in Oregon today. This untreated feldspar mineral displays a lovely kind of sunset color and, it is present in other areas like Tanzania; here, sunstone has hematite inclusions that show red and black flecks called the Schiller effect. Sunstone also has a mysterious history because it's relatively new to the American market. Originally, Vikings used this gem as a compass to lead them to North America. Because of this, sunstone has a great history and, it is becoming an American treasure due to its beauty and rarity.
